Gunpowder green tea is a type of Chinese green tea that is made from leaves that have been rolled into small pellets or balls that resemble gunpowder. Young English clerk apparently mistook the rolled green beads for gunpowder after seeing them. Gunpowder pearls got their name from this tail.
The tea leaves are hand-selected to produce the highest quality of flavor, fragrance, and attractive appearance. The leaves are typically steamed or pan-fired to stop oxidation and preserve their green color and fresh flavor. Then it is rolled into compact pearls, which helps it stay fresh for far longer than other green teas.
Interestingly, Gunpowder tea has become quite popular in the northern hemisphere owing to Taiwan, which produces some of the greatest Gunpowder tea in the world. The small pellets make a jingling and tinkling sound in the bowl or cup when pouring water to make tea. They open like flowers in hot water and softly sink to the bottom, creating attractive patterns that enhance the aesthetic enjoyment of sipping tea. This gunpowder produces a powerful, dark green brew with an identifiable scent, a little bitter but pleasant flavor, and a long finish. It is often served plain, without any additions like milk or sugar, to fully appreciate its unique taste. Without it, a teapot is incomplete!
Overall, gunpowder green tea is an excellent choice for those who enjoy strong, bold flavors and are looking for a healthy beverage option.
