Just when and where in the Arab world these two delicious ingredients were first combined in a drink or meal is unknown, although it was certainly a very long time ago. How long will that last? Some of the earliest references to ginger may be found in the Quran (Zingiber officinale in Latin). That the Arabs knew about the pungent root about the time the holy book was written (approximately 650 AD) is supported by this evidence. Citrus limonum is the Latin name for the lemon, and it was first referenced in literature around the turn of the tenth century in an agricultural treatise written by the Arab scientist Qustus al-Rumi.
